The Social Security Services (CCSS) in Costa Rica were interrupted several times this year due to labor strikes, the most recent movement which began September 10 was considered illegal by the Costa Rican Labor Courts in a resolution from October 1st; however, a previous movement which affected the services back on June 25 was just resolved by the labor courts and also deemed illegal.
The sentence was handed by judge Peggy Corrales, “The health sectors is an essential public service and therefore it fits within the prohibitions in the right to strike since the Costa Rican population cannot be deprived from such services”.
The movement from June 25 was also against the Fiscal Plan, and back then it affected 50% of the external consultation and 100% of the surgeries programmed in regional and peripheral hospitals, while main hospitals’ surgery services were affected between an 85-100%.
Labor unions now have three days to appeal this decision.
